According to the Competition Board decision taken in the meeting dated 07.05.2020, an investigation has been initiated about 29 undertakings including supermarket chains whether they violated the Act no 4054.

As is known, the Competition Authority has made warnings and announcements about market failures observed in price increases and in the supply chain since the beginning of COVID-19 outbreak. In this context, it is understood from this decision that depending on the analyses made within a period of nearly one month,  a strong opinion that the practices, especially extreme price increases, by some of the undertakings engaged in production and trade of food and cleaning/hygiene products might have violated competition law has been formed. 

Moreover, taken into account the Board’s approach in this period, it could be inferred that the Board may conclude the investigation in question faster than usual processes. It is possible to suggest that the overlap of the outbreak and the month of Ramadan might be one of the factors that have triggered the Board decision. It is also known that there is an on-going sector inquiry by the Board regarding supermarket chains.
